I haven’t done a lot of work this weekend. Well, today in particular. It’s a little difficult to summon the motivation, as usual, especially when I wonder if this is going to be the last time in, like, forever that I have no immediate responsibilities and also nothing but free time. Next summer I’ll be teaching a class, presumably, since that’s the only way I’ll get health insurance through the university, I think. (My funding for fall quarter conveniently didn’t include tuition or benefits, so while I can go on leave to avoid taking out loans, I’m on my own for health insurance, and it also means the university won’t carry over my insurance from winter and spring because I had to have had it all three quarters to qualify. Bastards.) And I’ll presumably either be trying to make considerable headway on my dissertation, or, hopefully, I’ll be making moving preparations so I can start a job next fall. And even when I have a job, having summers off is not the same thing as having summers “off.”
Still, I think I’m earned a little break. Aside from getting the good news about my article earlier this week, I also got well ahead of schedule with finishing my rough outline for the remaining chapters, uh, I think on Thursday. Yesterday I did spend a couple of hours sifting through the reviewers’ comments on my article and making notes of changes I need to make. Tomorrow I’m taking off since it’s my first anniversary, and I’ve planned a day full of fun stuff (hopefully the weather will cooperate). But Tuesday it’s back to the salt mines, since I need to go to a library and get a few books to find some data to incorporate into my revisions. With any luck, I’ll get the article revised by the end of next week and can be done with it.
Nice word of the day in the title there.
Well, at least if you’re going to the salt mines, you’ll have all those gnomes around the help you.
