According to a report from the Russian daily Kommersant, Obama has sent a letter to his Russian counterpart, Dmitri Medvedev, offering to scrap plans for an American anti-missile system based in Poland and the Czech Republic, if Moscow helps Washington in its negotiations to get Iran to abandon its nuclear program.

Supposedly the letter Obama sent to Medvedev mentions that if the Iranian nuclear threat is removed, the ostensible justification for the missile defense system would be eliminated.

I guess I’m still skeptical, because it seems entirely too logical and mutually beneficial (at least to Russia and the United States), plus it would rely on negotiations rather than pointless saber rattling.

And there is that whole novel suggestion that the United States abandon a military strategy once its original raison d’etre ceased to exist.

But, it would be a welcome sign of progress for the use of diplomacy rather than militarization in the cause of national security.
